Vanilla DonutsSophi ThompsonCeramics 2Class of 2025 This semester I wanted to create a body of work that was more complex and advanced than what I created in Ceramics 1 first semester. From the beginning of the year, I was dying to create a variety of forms with a single element that would connect them all. I also wanted to make pieces that my mom could use for keeping flowers in, such as tulips. I decided to create a series of Donut vases. For this process, I opened the clay all the way to the wheel head, creating a negative space in the center of the clay. Then I opened that donut of clay, making two walls which I then pulled and closed together, creating a hollow interior. So I created 5 donut vases using the wheel and then dipping them in white glaze to create unison amongst each piece. I started with smaller vases then I started to experiment with sizes and tools to create these pieces. I used coils to create the neck of my pieces but then for one piece I tried throwing a neck and then attaching it. I also tried a riskier approach by cutting the vases. The risk however was worth it because it gave the pieces a more abstract look to them compared to the others. I am really happy with my art show this year and I am very excited to continue to build my skills in the coming years.
